Performance Evaluation
The performance evaluation is a test of your skill on the job. It is the second component of the emerit tourism professional certification process. The intent of the evaluation is to confirm that candidates can demonstrate an ability to perform the skills in the workplace according to the standards.
Candidates are tested on their abilities to apply the terms, rules, principles, concepts, and procedures consistently under real working conditions.
Performance evaluation is usually conducted after the candidate has passed the knowledge exam for their occupation and provided evidence of the required number of hours of relevant workplace experience.
What You Need to Do
Performance is defined as "what you need to do". It is a set of occupational tasks that a person must be able to perform to standard. The performance-based assessment, often referred to as “industry evaluation”, is based on a selected group of skills from the National Occupational Standards.
Evaluation Process
The performance evaluation is conducted by a trained assessor who poses as a client or guest and observes the candidate in the process of work. The assessor is called an industry evaluator. He/she uses an assessment checklist and follows the specific strategy determined by the circumstances related to the job or skill set. Many industry evaluators are volunteers recruited because of past achievements and dedication to the process.
Evaluation Strategies
The performance evaluation can be conducted via a number of strategies. For example, incognito observations, interviews, the collection of pertinent evidence
(e.g., forms) or a review of documentation, may be involved.
- Incognito: The candidate is observed while on the job by an assessor who poses as a client/guest.
- Simulation: Candidate is placed in a situation that mimics as closely as possible an actual workplace.
- Case Study: Candidates are provided with a written example of a case or a “problem to solve” and asked to respond in a written form.
- Structured Interview: Key questions that require the candidate to form a complex response.
The self-review or supervisor sign-off checklist will help you prepare. It contains all of the potential skills you may be tested against. Ideally, your supervisor will assist you in ranking the skills listed on this checklist. Once you have mastered all of the skills, then your supervisor signs off this checklist indicating that you are ready for the formal evaluation.
Candidates must achieve a set passing score in order to complete the performance evaluation phase of the certification process.
Work Experience
In addition to a scheduled performance evaluation, candidates are also required to provide evidence for a specified number of hours of workplace experience.
