Certification Process
A certification program is designed to identify and recognize individuals who meet the National Occupational Standards defining competence in a field. Certified workers, on average, are more competent than non-certified workers, because certified workers usually undergo additional training geared toward the certification requirements particular to their occupation.

The emerit certification credential is awarded to candidates based solely on their achievement of successful passes on the certification examinations and on them having met the specified experience requirements. The certification examinations are built directly from the National Occupational Standards following rigorous, academically accepted testing principles.

Basic Certification Requisites
The certification requirements are different for various tourism occupations at various levels of experience, but the overall process consists of three main components. To become certified, you need to:
- Successfully complete a multiple-choice examination to test one’s knowledge of the occupation. The exams are based on the National Occupational Standards.
- Obtain the required number of hours of workplace experience. Generally, this is 4-6 months but it can be up to 2 years for supervisory and managerial occupations.
- Successfully pass the performance evaluation. This is a practical assessment of one’s skills. In most cases, this is a demonstration of one’s competency in the workplace, which is usually assessed by a “ghost visitor”.
Additional Requirements
Other requirements may include the need for a candidate to produce evidence of successfully completing third-party training program, such as basic first aid, WHMIS, gun handling, safe food handling, or responsible beverage service.
In some cases, a candidate must successfully complete either the written examination for a related occupation or be certified in that occupation.
Candidates are required to pay the certification fees. These fees help to defray the costs of administration and candidate assessment.
