Bottom Line: Perceptions of Tourism Employment 1.0

This report provides the results of a survey of Canadians conducted in the spring of 2016 as a follow-up to the 2015 update to the tourism labour supply and demand study. This survey investigates perceptions towards employment in the tourism sector and analyses the experiences and skills obtained by those who have worked in the sector. The report also examines Canadian perceptions of possible strategies the could mitigate the labour shortages tourism faces.

Among other findings, the study found that:

  • 27% of Canadians have worked in the tourism sector
  • 62% of Canadians would recommend a career in tourism to family and friends
  • 54% support expanding international work exchange programs
  • 91% of Canadians believe that tourism is a place where young people can increase their work experience and job skills
  • 23.4% opposed introducing a seasonal immigrant worker program for tourism
  • 77.4% of Canadians think that tourism businesses should provide more training for employees
