What is emerit Professional Certification?

Based on the National Occupational Standards, emerit Professional Certification is a prestigious, national credential that recognizes individuals who have demonstrated their competence in the workplace.

Professional certification from emerit:

  • • Raises professionalism and improves job performance;
  • • Attests to a student’s superior on-the-job performance;
  • • Provides students with a competency-based industry credential that is recognized by employers across the country.

emerit Professional Certification is an assessment of an individual against the skills, knowledge and attitudes described in the National Occupational Standards for the occupation. The certification exam tests your students’ applied knowledge, and the experience requirement verifies that your students have the work experience necessary to be considered competent. For some occupations, a further assessment is undertaken to measure the candidate’s performance on the job.

When your students complete emerit Professional Certification they earn the right to use a professional designation and join the more than 16,000 professionals across Canada and beyond who have proven that they meet the standard!

How does it benefit my students?

Post-secondary education provides numerous benefits to students by providing them the opportunity to gain deep knowledge about a field of study and to hone their skills under the tutelage of seasoned educators and industry professionals. It is all about learning, and success in a post-secondary program means that a student has successfully achieved the stated program learning outcomes.

emerit Professional Certification, on the other hand, attests to an individual’s competence by measuring their applied knowledge, experience, and performance against an industry-defined National Occupational Standard. It’s all about competence and performance, and since it is developed, validated, and recognized by industry leaders across Canada, it is a perfect complement to your program that will give students the edge in a competitive job market.

How does it work?

The first step in connecting your students to professional certification is to ensure that your program is aligned with the National Occupational Standards. This includes benchmarking your program to ensure that it covers all of the competencies in the standards at the appropriate breadth (range of competencies covered and range of contexts in which they are applied) and depth (the level of knowledge or performance required). SPARK: The Tourism Educator’s Resource Guide contains information on using competency standards to develop and update programs; you can also contact an emerit representative who can assist you in getting started.

In order to achieve certification, your students will need to pass the certification exam and complete the occupational experience requirement. Graduates of partnered academic programs receive an automatic 10% credit toward the experience requirement for their occupation. An emerit representative can help you to register students and schedule a proctored exam writing session for your group, which can often be completed on campus in a computer lab.

The emerit certification exam tests applied knowledge and adheres to rigorous psychometric testing standards. It is important that students prepare for this exam as they would any other by reviewing the standards, reflecting on their experience performing the competencies on the job, and becoming familiar with the exam format. Certification Prep Packs provided by emerit will assist your students in getting prepared.

There are a number of options available for integrating emerit Professional Certification into your course or program. Please contact an emerit representative to learn more about how your students can become certified industry leaders!
